SCARVE / IRRADIANT

Hailing from France, Scarve are a Progressive Death Metal band with some very impressive and impossible time changes that give it an almost avant garde Jazz feel that makes for very interesting listening.

This is definitely one out of the ordinary, sounding like an amalgamation of Voivod, Emperor & Strapping Young Lad and the guitarist Sylvain Coudret gets a special mention as his playing throughout this CD is exemplary, his emotive, creative and imaginative lead work is fluid and flawless and bring to mind Satraini and Vai but he is in no way copying them. The rest of the band are just as proficient and keep together all the songs that are not just vehicles for Sylvain to show off, they are a band and the mix of gruff and clean vocals works well.

This has to be heard, the likes of "Mirthless Perspectives", "An Emptier Void", "Fire Proven" and the title track are too good to go unheard and the weird staccato time signature of "Asphyxiate" is impossible to describe except it’s bordering on brilliant.

If you are looking for something to engage your imagination this release is the one for you, I’m off the track down a copy of their previous release "Luminiferious". The first pressing of this has 2 live tracks as a bonus and a very good multimedia section, including 2 videos.
