THE FORSAKEN / TRACES OF THE PAST

This came out the tail end of last 2003 and so becomes the first review of 2004 and a fine CD it is too. This is the 3rd from Swedish Black Metal band The Forsaken and like it’s predecessors "Manifest Of Hate" and "Art Of Desolation" is as fine a piece of modern Metal as you will find anywhere.

They say you cant judge a book by it’s cover but the cover of this CD does give you a very good idea, full of dark foreboding images of a future Armageddon, the sky is black and full of menace, lightning strikes and you know you are in for something good. The music they make does reflect the feel of the art, full of choppy riffs, tight drums beats and vocals from hell but with a slight touch of melody just to spice things up. Fro the title you would expect this to have influences of some of the greats before it, Slayer, Metallica, Emperor etc and yes you can here touches of these and more in their songs but it is fundamentally their own sound that comes flooding through.

Just take a look at the track titles to see where they are coming from "A Time To Die", "One More Hill", Glitches Will Tell", "Serpent’s Tongue", need I go on. If you like this sort of music, don’t over look this superb opus. Oh and there is a truly great version of the Metallica song "Blackened"

Just to wet you appetite.
