FILTER / THE AMALGAMUT
There is no denying that Title Of The Record was the best from Filter so far, so it's good news that this is business as usual from the ex Nine Inch Nails guy but this one has the added bonus of being a little more experimental on a couple of tracks.
If you know Filter you know what to expect on the whole, you get the total balls to the wall tracks, "So I Quit", "American Cliché" and the more radio friendly tracks, (catchy as hell) "Where Do We Go From Here" and "God Damn Me" and trust me you will be singing along to them as soon as you hear them.
Then comes the interesting tracks, tagged onto the end of the CD "World Today" and "The 4th", these are both very experimental and are more akin to what NIN do at times but more so. "World Today" is very rhythmic and eastern flavoured with what sounds like tabla's on the track and is a very emotive, atmospheric piece that draws you into it's beauty. The last track sort of follows on and is a monotonal piece based around a single chord that is supposed to invoke subliminal emotions and feelings that have been preconditioned. I told you it was way out there and I have to say that if you listen intently to the 8 minute plus track it does indeed leave you feeling very, very calm and peaceful and reminds me a bit of the work the Brian ENO did in the early 80's.
There is also a CD ROM tack that explains the principle in more detail.
