EMPEROR / PROMETHEUS
The last Emperor CD (wasn’t that a film?) is probably the most difficult to get to grips with, mixing avant garde chord sequences with atonal structure and Death Metal thrown in for good measure. In fact listening to this a bit like listening to at least 2 different things at once, there is the classical structure in the background and the bludgeoning Metal in the foreground.
When listening to a piece like "In The Wordless Chamber" you think you have got to grips with what they are trying to achieve and then they go off at a complete tangent in a totally unexpected direction. "The Prophet" is the most easily accessible track to get to grips with there is so much going on that I get the feeling it will take a few months to get to grips with this last opus.
This is probably going to go down in Rock history as a milestone for extreme music, genetically fusing types of music that would not normally go together in the normal course of things. Overall this is a very challenging CD and it is definitely not Easy Listening, however if you enjoy pushing back your musical boundaries there is no other CD that I know of that will challenge you as much as this will. A total masterpiece that is inspired or rucking fubbish, you decide.
